Thyme is a widespread plant in the Mediterranean region, traditionally used as a culinary and medicinal herb. In the 11th century, thyme spread to monasteries in other parts of Europe, where it is still cultivated today. Its name derives from the Greek word “thymus,” meaning courage.
Thyme essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the fresh flowering plant. Approximately 150 kg of plant material is needed to produce 1 kg of essential oil. Thyme essential oil is traditionally used for its antimicrobial properties.
