Patchouli is a plant with hairy, aromatic leaves that thrives in the tropical regions of Burma, India, and Malaysia. Today, patchouli is a significant raw material in perfume production. Interestingly, as patchouli essential oil ages and matures, it becomes richer and more aromatic.
The thick, brownish-yellow oil is obtained by steam distillation of dried leaves. The main component of this essential oil is sesquiterpenes.
