Eucalyptus radiata is a large tree endemic to Australia. Eucalypts, the giants of the plant kingdom, are aromatic trees belonging to the Myrtaceae family. The essential oil it produces is stored in small, transparent pockets on the leaves. The dark green eucalyptus leaves hang vertically and release a peppery scent when rubbed or crushed.
Previously classified under the name Eucalyptus amygdalina, Eucalyptus radiata received its botanical name in 1915. In ancient times, people burned the leaves to purify the air in sickrooms.
The essential oil is produced on-site from the leafy branches of Eucalyptus radiata. Approximately 50 kg of Eucalyptus radiata leaves are required to obtain 1 liter of essential oil through steam distillation.
