There are more than 200 different species of pelargonium, but to produce geranium essential oil so called «scented pelargonium» is needed (Pelargonium graveolens). Because of its beautiful scent it is one of the favourite scents of the parfume industry.
The essential oil is produced by steam distillation of flowers and leaves and the oil is greenish in colour. It takes over 500 kg of plant material to produce 1 kg of essential oil.
Geranium essential oil has significant antifungal properties so it has traditionally been used for fungal infections of the skin and scalp. Geranium essential oil balances hormones and has a beneficial effect on menstrual problems, PMS, states of depression. It is good for all skin types, especially for tired and mature skin. It is a favourite addition to skin care emulsions because of its pleasant flowery scent.
